Which EV charging cable is right for you?

Having an electric vehicle is a big decision. It not only transforms the way you use your car and how it works for you and your family, but you can also drive happily, knowing you’re doing your bit for the planet. However, choosing the right car for you is only the beginning, and the accessories also need to be the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

But never fear! As our Simply Autos guide to the right EV Charging cable is here. It’s all about taking a look at three simple steps that will ensure you’re getting a charging cable fit for purpose.

1 – Which vehicle connection type applies to your vehicle?

2 – Where will you charge your vehicle?

3 – Which of our cables is perfect for both elements above?

Step 1

Which vehicle connection type applies to your vehicle?

Type 1 Plug - The Type 1 plug is a single-phase plug which allows for charging power levels of up to 7.4 kW (230 V, 32 A). This standard is used in car models from the Asia region and is rare in Europe, which is why there are very few public Type 1 charging stations across the UK. Type 1 is the original standard but was quickly superseded when more power was required.

Type 2 Plug - The Type 2 plug offers the option of both single and three-phase power. The plug’s main area of distribution is Europe and is now the standard model. Single-phase options at 7.2kW rating are ideal to use at dedicated home chargers. Three-phase public chargers are capable of levels of up to 22 kW. Most public charging stations are equipped with a Type 2 socket, which makes it very handy when you’re on the road frequently and for long periods of time. You’re sure to find a suitable charging station not too far away!

Step 2

Where will you be charging your vehicle?

At Home

At the office

Using public fast charge stations?

Many consumers feel anxious about ensuring their electric car stays topped up for their journeys. However, this need is no different to any other fuel and in fact, is even easier than heading to the petrol station, as many EV owners can charge their vehicle whilst they sleep at night!

Will you charge your vehicle mostly at night, or at home? There are a couple of options for home use – a standard 3-pin mains plug which provides flexibility but the slowest charge speed, or a dedicated charging box on your driveway which offers much faster speeds.

Are you looking to charge your vehicle at the office? Many companies are installing charge points at their offices to encourage greener travel. The alternative is a cable out the window to plug into the 3-pin plug. This doesn’t exactly look too professional and slick but could be used in an emergency!

How about public charging stations? If you are driving long distances and running out of range on journeys your only option is to use the high-powered public charge stations. For this, you will want a 22kw cable that can handle the power! You won’t be sat there too long though, as they are quick, efficient and so handy on the road!

Step 3

Which EV Charger do you need?

Just be sure to choose a cable that best suits your vehicle and lifestyle to enable you to get the most value for money. Keeping an electric vehicle topped up with power is essential to living with these modern cars. It may be that you need to invest in more than one type of cable if you vary your charging techniques regularly, but this will ensure you’re always topped up and ready to get back on the road in no time.
