Safe driving in all seasons
Whether you’re new to driving, or you’re a seasoned driver with many years of experience, you’ll know that with weather changes, comes very differing conditions on the roads. From the glaring sun and heat in the summer, to the frosty and icy roads of the winter, it’s constantly changing. And, as a driver, you need to be safe on the roads and feel confident that your car can handle it through any journey short or long.
Right now, as we sit here writing this blog, we are in the depths of winter. Spring is starting to show through though, which is a welcome site after a rather gloomy few months! However, we aren’t out of the coldest months just yet, and whether we are off out for our essential journey to the shops, or heading to commuting to work, it’s important to be prepared. Check out our tips and tools below to help you see your car through the last throws of winter, and be super organised for the latter part of this year!
Ice: That dreaded feeling when you open the curtains on a cold winter’s morning and see that frost has taken hold across the street! Nobody likes heading our to de-ice the car in the morning, but making sure your visibility is perfect for the road ahead is absolutely essential. All windows and mirrors need to be free from ice and snow so you can drive safely (don’t forget to remove any snow from your roof too before setting off! Snowing falling off a moving car is dangerous for you and other drivers on the road). We have a great range of ice scrapers that are easy to use and store in your car. Or, for extra comfort in the cold, grab an ice scraper with glove to keep those fingers warm!
Covers: Want an even better way to make those cold mornings easier? Then cover your car at night! Car Covers are great for general car protection, but they are water-resistant and will protect your car from frost, dust, sunlight, rain, tree sap, bird droppings and of course, ice and snow! Our snow covers come in a range of sizes and are easy to fit, so check out the full range here.
Lights: Driving in the winter doesn’t just require preparation for the cold weather. Winter naturally causes many of us to drive to or from work in the dark. That in itself requires more focus and dedication to safe driving, and ensuring our cars are up to the job. Even if you don’t drive at dawn or dusk, heavy clouds and rainy days cause visibility to be reduced and having lights on whilst driving is an absolute must. Have you checked your car lights lately? Check your headlights, indicators, brake and reverse lights to make sure they’re all working and sort them immediately before your next journey if not. Check out our full range of bulbs here and stock up if you need to. Don’t forget to speak to a local stockist about the correct lights for your car too.
Breakdown Preparation: Of course the last thing we want in the middle of winter is to break down. However, it can unfortunately happen to any of us, no matter the age, quality or condition of our vehicle, and being prepared means you’re as safe as possible when out on the road. Firstly, if you do break down, it’s important to put out a warning triangle on the road to alert other drives that your car is stopped ahead and they will need to go around you slowly and safely. Secondly, it’s good to have a bag in the car with a spare phone charger, blanket, spare shoes or coat or even a snack or two. This will ensure you are comfortable, particularly if you are waiting a while for recovery. And finally, we are proud to stock a range of recovery products to help you get back out onto the road in no time (No need to wait for that recovery!). From battery chargers to tow rope belts, check out our full range here and be prepared should an unfortunate breakdown happen.
Feel more prepared about your winter adventures in the car? Great! Don’t forget that driving safely in the winter is all about preparation. The more prepared you are, the safe you will be and the more stress-free your experience will become.
